Breast augmentation is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures.  Dr. Cortés  will assess your tissue characteristics including your skin quality, nipple location in respect to the breast fold, and breast volume. He will also use the latest technology in breast imaging to educate you and facilitate the selection of the most appropriate implant for your body frame. The brand new technology called the XS-300 Surgical Simulation System in photo-realistic 3D will help you see what you would look like after your breast procedure. We are the only practice in Houston and its sorroundings offering this service.

Breast augmentation will increase your  breast size from one to three (1-3) cups. The surgery  may also move the breasts closer together depending on the size of the implant, location of the implant, and the patient's body frame. In addition, for certain types of breast sagging, breast augmentaion alone will lift the nipple to the correct anatomical position.  Breast augmentation is a tremendous help to patients who desire a fuller profile or who have lost breast volume due to pregnancy or nursing.

There are many surgical approaches to enhance the breast. The location of the incision will depend on various factors, such as amount of sagging, nipple size, and breast volume as well as patient preference. Breast augmentation involves making a small incision to insert a breast implant. The location of the incision will depend on many factors including the degree of breast sagging, the areolar diameter, and the size of the breast among others. There are several possible locations for the small incision that will be used for inserting the breast implants.  The most frequent technique utilizes an incision made in the lower portion of the breast.  This techinque provides  the most direct access to the breast pocket and the best control of the implant pocket.   There is a second technique that requires an incision around the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple). There are two other techniques that are used for breast augmentation. First, there is still a newer technique that uses an incision in the belly button, thus reducing the chance of scarring in the breast area.  Another technique will require an incision on the axilla. The best approach will be decided by both the patient and the surgeon during the consultation.

Implants typically contain a saline solution (similar to saltwater) although the FDA has recently appproved the use of silicone implants for primary breast augmentation. In some circumstances, particularly those in which there is breast asymmetry (uneven breast size), an inflatable implant may be used to allow the surgeon to adjust the level of inflation to attain breast symmetry and balance.  The surgery typically lasts from 45 minutes to an hour. If a breast lift is required, the surgery will take longer and will be more complex. The surgery is commonly performed on an outpatient basis (same day discharge)  at a hospital or state-of-the-art surgical unit while the patient is under general anesthesia and asleep.

Recovery Process

Generally, the recovery period takes from one to four (1-4) days. Patients will be encouraged to do active exercises.  Once the bandages are removed, a surgical bra will need to be worn for several weeks.  Patients sometimes report minor pain associated with the surgery.  This pain can be treated effectively with oral medication.
