A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, is a procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts as a result of aging or pregnancy.  As a woman ages, the skin loses some elasticity, which can cause the breasts to lose their natural shape and firmness.  This procedure is designed to elevate the breasts and give them a more youthful appearance.  A breast lift may also be completed in conjunction with breast enlargement surgery (augmentation).

General Procedure

During your breast lift, Dr. Cortés will remove excess skin and relocate  the nipple to a higher position. He will then perform internal breast reshaping in order to create a fuller and youthful breast. The breast lift usually takes two to three (2-3) hours.  In certain situations, when an implant is needed due to a loss of volume, the procedure will take from three to four (3-4) hours. The different techniques to lift the breast will vary depeding on the amount of skin to be removed and how much the nipple and areola are moved into a higher position.

Some patients, especially those with relatively small breasts and minimal sagging, may be candidates for modified procedures requiring less extensive incisions.  One such procedure is the periareolar approach in which circular incision is made around the areola and a doughnut-shaped area of skin is removed.  Dr. Cortés performs the most recent  breast lift techniques to minimize the amount of scarring. If the patient is having an implant inserted along with the breast lift, the implant will be placed in a pocket directly under the breast tissue or under the muscle of the chest wall. Breast lift surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure ( same day discharge).

Recovery Process

Generally, there is mild to moderate discomfort after surgery. The typical swelling and  bruising improves in five to ten (5-10) days.  You will need to wear a support bra for four weeks.
