Butt lift is the procedure where excess loose skin is removed to better contour the buttock and improve its shape. There are two ways of achieving a butt lift. The first one is by direct incision of the skin. The ideal candidate for this operation is an individual with excess skin and sagginess along the buttocks. Most patients that require this type of procedure have had massive weight loss secondary to diet or weight loss surgery like a lap band. This form of body contouring procedure reduces excess skin and fat that is left behind from the expansion of skin, loss of fat, and lack of tissue elasticity that results after weight loss. The buttock lift is intended to produce tighter and more attractive buttock skin with improved contours. The procedure is similar to an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck but for the buttock. During surgery, the incision is placed low on the back, just above the buttocks. Fat is usually deficient in these patients because of their weight loss and is typically not removed but relocated by various methods to improve the projection (perkiness) of the butt. The scar is hidden by most underwear and bikini swimwear and generally heals well.
The second method is by fat injection. If the amount of sagginess and excess skin is mild to moderate and the patient has extra fat in other areas, then fat injection can be used to fill the areas of deficiency. Whenever there is a deflated look of the buttock, injecting fat at the inferior gluteal fold and certain areas of the butt will create the illusion of a better and lifted butt.
Dr. Cortés will assess the amount of skin and fat in your buttock. Depending on these two components, he will determine which type of butt lift will be the most indicated for your particular needs. If fat is needed and fat injection is indicated, liposuction of your thigh, abdomen, lower back and /or other areas will be done. The fat is then purified and injected into different areas and depths so that the patient gets longer lasting results. Dr. Cortés injects most of the fat inside the muscle of the buttock. This will provide the best level for fat injection because the blood supply at this level will be optimal for fat survival. The correct injection method is crucial to achieve a uniform, smooth and natural appearance.
The surgery tipically done under general anesthesia lasts three to four (3-4) hours and is done in the hospital or as an outpatient (same day discharge). If fat transfer is done, the patient cannot sit directly on the buttock for 10 -14 days. This will ensure a better chance of permanent results. Most people will be able to return to work in two weeks. A special garment must be worn for four weeks, if concomittant liposuction is performed.
