Buttock augmentation is a major plastic surgery procedure that adds projection and shape to the buttocks. Just like any surgery, it comes with the attendant risks and side effects. That said, the patient is advised to avoid a number of activities during the critical recovery period. Driving is particularly discouraged for a specific period of time after buttock augmentation.
The procedure is performed with the use of butt implants or fat grafting. Butt implants are highly durable, semi-solid, and flexible gluteal implants that are placed inside the buttocks to achieve the desired aesthetic goals. On the other hand, the fat grafting surgery involves the harvesting and processing of excess fats in specific body areas and transferring the purified, natural fats to your butt to enhance shape and projection.
Whether you are augmenting your butts with implants or fat transfer, your plastic surgeon will advise you to avoid driving for a specified period after the procedure. The length of time may vary from one surgeon to another. Basically, it depends on the speed of your recovery and healing from the surgical trauma.
It goes without saying that following buttock augmentation, your butts are at its most delicate and sensitive to any type of pressure due to the incisions performed to augment your buttocks. It needs time to properly heal and close. While the incisions have been sutured, unnecessary pressure or force can result in wound dehiscence and you really do not want this to happen. During the first two weeks, avoid sleeping or resting on your back. Sitting is specifically not allowed, except for bathroom visits, during the critical two weeks following plastic surgery.
The undesirable pressure on the butts will not only damage the aesthetic goals achieved with buttock augmentation but also trigger other complications like a seroma, infections, excessive bleeding, and hematoma. For this reason, patients are told to avoid driving during the recovery period, because driving involves sitting, which adds pressure on your butts. Also, speed bumps during driving can be particularly damaging.
During the recovery period, some patients are prescribed medications that can have side effects that affect driving capability and lead to traffic accidents. This is yet another reason why driving is not allowed during the buttock augmentation recovery period.
One of the frequently asked questions of patients is: “How soon can I drive after a buttock augmentation?”
Generally speaking, you need at least two weeks before you can comfortably get up and resume light, daily activities. Plastic surgeons strongly recommend buttock augmentation patients to avoid driving for the first 2-3 weeks after the procedure to avoid pressure on the butt and because it may not be safe to drive while under medication.
Even after the prescribed period when you can start to drive, it is recommended that you place a pillow under your back and some rolled foam under your legs while driving for at least two weeks or you can get the butt donut cushion available online. This can help absorb the pressure and force applied to your butts.
Remember, it is very important to follow your surgeon’s instructions when it comes to driving after buttock augmentation. Not doing so can seriously affect aesthetic outcomes aside from putting you at risk for serious health complications.
