Liposuction is a less invasive surgical procedure that helps patients deal with the unwanted, excess fat in the body. Through this procedure, the fat is targeted and removed from different areas of the body. Surgeons typically focus on areas of the body where the fat would be difficult to burn or remove through the traditional way of exercise and a balanced diet.
The liposuction procedure can be used on any area of the body – even on the face, the extremities or the posterior. Despite its convenience, it should not be used as a weight loss treatment. This procedure is typically suggested as just a way of sculpting and improving the body to people whose forms are already ideal. By removing the fat from strategic areas, the surgeons can help patients achieve a more flattering body shape.
Only subcutaneous fat – the fat that beneath the skin – is targeted by the liposuction procedure. The visceral fat, which covers the different internal organs, cannot be removed through the liposuction procedure. Patients need exercise and a proper diet if they wish to remove the visceral fat. The subcutaneous fat is more stubborn and it may persist, despite regular exercise and a balanced diet.
Liposuction usually targets the abdominal area, in addition to the thighs and arms in order to provide a better shape. By removing the fat in these areas, patients can appear thinner without losing their curves. Although the liposuction procedure deals with the excess fat, this may result in sagging skin, especially if the patient has already lost a great deal of weight. The skin is naturally elastic, but it doesn’t contract as fast as it expands. This is why people who have lost a lot of weight may have sagging skin on their body. For patients with sagging skin accompanying remnants of subcutaneous fat, a lift procedure is a far better option.
Nowadays, there are different techniques for the liposuction procedure. Due to technological advancements, liposuction procedures are now safer and more comfortable for patients. In the tumescent liposuction technique, local anesthesia is used. A solution of lidocaine, epinephrine and salt is inserted into the fatty tissue. This solution, together with the fat, will be siphoned out of the body. This technique doesn’t require the use of general anesthesia.
Other techniques include the ultrasound-assisted liposuction or a laser-assisted liposuction. In these procedures, the ultrasound or laser is used to liquefy the fat before it is siphoned out through the cannula. The liquefied fat can easily pass through the small cannula.
A liposuction procedure should only be performed by experienced and board certified surgeons. If too much of the fat is removed, it will produce a disproportionate shape, resulting in a less attractive form. The patient should be conscious of their decision in choosing the right surgeon for the procedure.
