Enhancing the buttocks with fat

Enhancing the buttocks with fat

Introduction

Many women (and probably men too) have fantasized about removing fat from areas of the body where it is in excess and adding it to the breasts or the buttocks. The reality is that plastic surgeons alike have been trying to find the means to make this possible even since liposuction started to be performed. What better way to sculpt the body than by removing fat from areas where it is not wanted and using it to fill areas that could do with some more volume?

The procedure that makes this possible is called fat transfer and has been performed for quite some time now, but it is only recently that the results of these procedures have improved considerably. This means that nowadays it is possible to enhance the buttocks with fat collected from the tummy to make your dreams come true. In this article, we will discuss about how this procedure can be performed, what it entails, and how to sustain the results for longer.

Abdominal liposuction

Liposuction is the most performed plastic surgery procedure in the world, and the abdomen is probably the area most targeted with this procedure. There are many reasons why we shouldn’t be surprised by these facts. Being an eligible candidate for abdominal liposuction means you have a normal weight that has been stable for a minimum of six months. In other words, liposuction is not a method to be used for patients who want to lose weight quickly and without any efforts, but for patients close to their ideal weight who are struggling with an excess of adipose tissue on the tummy.

The reality is that fat tends to accumulate in this area on both men and women and despite an active lifestyle, it can become a real aesthetic issue over time. The only method to correct localized fat deposits is with liposuction. Exercises and diets help tone the whole body or a generalized weight loss, but with liposuction, we can target specific areas of the body and leave fat in others unaffected. For example, many patients avoid keeping a diet even if they are bothered by abdominal fat tissue because they don’t want to lose fat from areas such as the face, buttocks, and breasts. This is when abdominal liposuction comes to the rescue. When the procedure is performed, the plastic surgeon will insert a hollow steel cannula under the skin through small incisions made in different areas of the abdomen and the flanks. With the cannula, he will perform back and forth movements which are designed to liquefy and dislodge the fat cells in excess that will be then suctioned into a powerful medical vacuum device that is connected to the cannula. Once the surgeon is happy with the amount of fat that is eliminated from the tummy and the flanks, liposuction is complete and the incisions are sutured.

But when considering enhancing the buttocks with the fat collected from the tummy, this fat will not be discharged but saved and processed for the next stage of the procedure.

Buttock lipofilling

Fat transfer to the buttocks entails the use of the fat removed from the abdominal area and injected into the buttocks. After liposuction is completed, the fat cells collected will go through a thorough purification process that aims to eliminate damaged fat cells and other impurities. The healthy, pure fat cells resulted after this process are injected into the buttocks with special syringes. The plastic surgeon needs to be careful and inject only small amounts of fat in different areas of the buttocks. If we inject too much fat in one place, granulomas can be created or the fat cells might die and be reabsorbed by the body.

While it sounds like an easy procedure, injecting fat into the buttocks is actually a rather difficult procedure that is only offered by some plastic surgeons. Moreover, the plastic surgeon performing it needs to have lots of experience and a keen eye for detail to achieve spectacular results. Always make sure to check before and after pictures of buttock lipofilling on other patients before scheduling your procedure with a certain plastic surgeon.

The biggest risk when this procedure is performed is for the results to be unsatisfactory and the fat to disappear within months after the procedure. But to avoid this from happening, it is also the patient’s responsibility, and a certain amount of post-operative care is required.

Sustaining the results of fat transfer to the buttocks

Fat transfer to the buttocks procedure can deliver impressive results in patients with a clear recommendation for the procedure and who manage to follow the instructions of the plastic surgeon to the letter. To get good results and to be able to sustain them for longer is a joint effort of the plastic surgeon and the patient. The plastic surgeon needs to perform all the three steps of the procedure (liposuction, purification of fat, fat transfer) correctly to ensure a large amount of fat survives in the buttocks. After this, it is the patient’s responsibility to make sure that the fat doesn’t disappear over time.

The first two to three weeks after butt lipofilling are essential for the success of the procedure. During this time, the patient is advised to avoid sitting directly on the buttocks or lying on the back. Putting pressure on the buttocks at this time can easily result in the death of the fat cells. Sleeping and resting should only be done on the tummy for a minimum of three weeks post-op, and after this, a special pillow or multiple pillows should be used to avoid the direct contact of the buttocks with hard surfaces.

The compression garments recommended by the plastic surgeon should also be worn non-stop for a few weeks post-op and then for another month or so, but only during the day. The compression garments have the role of reducing the swelling that can naturally occur after this procedure and also enhances the results that can be achieved. While there is a minimal risk of developing an infection, patients are still advised to pay attention to the incisions and keep the operated area clean and dry at all times.

Smoking after the procedure increases the risks exponentially. The plastic surgeon’s recommendation will be to avoid smoking three weeks before and after the procedure. In this manner, we ensure the fat cells grafted will manage to develop a new blood network and survive in the buttocks. Smoking can lead to fat necrosis or the death or the fat cells. This is why it is important to avoid smoking and even secondhand smoking if you want to sustain the results for longer.

After the initial recovery period, there are few risks and dangers to the fat transferred to the buttocks. However, it the results of fat transfer can be affected even years after the procedure if the patient is undergoing weight fluctuations. Three months after the procedure, there is no risk for the fat cells to disappear again; however, if weight loss occurs, these fat cells will lose volume, just like the other fat cells initially in the buttocks before the procedure. This means that the aesthetic results can be sustained only if the patient can avoid weight loss after the procedure.
