How large are the incisions for breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation is the plastic surgery procedure that we use to increase the volume of the bust and change the shape of breasts in women. The procedure is one of the most demanded plastic surgery procedures in the United States and all over the world. Patients undergoing breast augmentation with implants are often young women, in good health and emotional condition, and with reasonable expectations from the procedure. Many of these patients undergo the procedure because they have been confronted with a discomfort associated with small breasts that may make them feel not feminine or appealing enough. After the procedure, many patients report an increase in self-esteem as well as an improvement in quality of life. However, before scheduling breast augmentation, patients should be aware of all the aspects of the procedure.
Among the details that will be discussed in detail during the pre-operative consultation are the incisions for the breast augmentation. The position and dimensions of the incisions are important because this is a good indication of how the scars will be. Scars are unavoidable when breast augmentation is performed, so make sure to find out the details about the incisions before going through with your procedure.
A responsible plastic surgeon will know how to make the incision as small as possible and hidden in the natural folds of the body. Generally speaking, the incision to introduce the implant is about 4 to 5 cm, but their size is dependent on the position, the volume of implant, and type of implant. You should know that the incisions for breast augmentation can be made around the areola, in the inframammary fold, or in the axilla. The periareolar incision can only be used for moderate- size implants as the incision dimensions won’t allow the insertion of huge implants. The inframammary incision is often preferred as the scar will be barely visible in the inframammary fold and the plastic surgeon can introduce silicone implants that are larger in size. Moreover, in case of revision surgery, neither the periareolar or the transaxillary incisions can be used, so the inframammary incision will be performed if it is not already there from the initial procedure.
The incisions for breast augmentation are much smaller when the patient decides to get saline solution implants. These implants come empty and start as a silicone shell that is inserted in the breasts through the incisions. Only after they are already positioned in their pockets will the plastic surgeon start filling them with saline solution. Considering the fact that the incisions are used to insert just an empty silicone capsule, they can be much smaller compared to incisions made to introduce a big silicone implant.
Keep in mind that there are things that the patient can do to minimize the appearance of the scars after breast augmentation.
