How to best prepare for the breast augmentation surgery

Breast augmentation is a complex and delicate plastic surgery procedure. For it to be successful, it needs to be performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon and for the patient to prepare properly and to adopt the right post-operative behavior. Even during the initial consultation, the plastic surgeon should share with you the details of how to best prepare for breast augmentation surgery.

You should know that before the procedure can be performed, the patient should take a mammary echography or mammography for patients who are over 40 years old. About two weeks before the procedure, you will need to stop taking certain anti-inflammatory medication or other medication that can have an effect on blood coagulation. Birth control pills should be stopped a month before breast augmentation surgery as they could trigger blood clots. Keep in mind that the procedure should be scheduled outside the menstrual cycle.

If you are confronted with preexisting medical issues such as high blood pressure, blood disorders, diabetes, allergies and so on, make sure to let the plastic surgeon know about these as soon as possible. If you are taking any treatment for a certain condition, discuss the dosage and the details with him as they might need to be changed before the surgery.

Smoking should also be avoided for at least three weeks before surgery. This is an important recommendation, and not following it can lead to post-operative complications and also a lengthier recovery process. Sun exposure is also to be avoided for at least a month before breast augmentation. We want the skin in the area to be in its best condition possible, not burnt by the sun. This is important for recovery and the cicatrization process.

A healthy regimen is recommended for a month before the procedure. This means that the patient should eat healthy, balanced meals and not indulge in overeating or keep a strict diet before surgery as the recovery could be made more difficult.

Since the procedure is often performed with the patient under general anesthesia, the recommendation is not to eat or drink anything the night before the procedure or within six to eight hours before the surgery.

Aside from the physical preparation, it is important to prepare emotionally for surgery. Keep in mind that the procedure will change the appearance of your body forever and your breasts will never look the same. Try to get used to this idea before undergoing the procedure. Moreover, make sure to get clothes that have buttons in the front, are easy to put on, and will be able to accommodate the new size of the breasts after the surgery as you will need them for the recovery period.
