Is it normal to feel tired after a breast augmentation?

One of the most commonly performed procedures nowadays is breast augmentation surgery. The procedure is usually combined with implants, even if plastic surgery offers another method for breast augmentation that uses the patient’s own fat cells. Breast augmentation with implants has been performed for more than half a century now and the results of the last years have been spectacular, especially when the procedure is performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon.

The breast augmentation procedure is recommended for patients with underdeveloped breasts as well as patients suffering due to other imperfections of the breasts such as asymmetries. The size, shape, and volume of the implants are very important, and it is only by using the right type of implant that patients can achieve satisfactory results. The implants we use nowadays are of a high quality, and most of the complications associated with them have been solved when the new generation of implants has been released. The FDA has approved the implants used now, so this means they are safe for the patient.

This procedure is performed to enhance the physical appearance of the patient by increasing the size of the breasts and making them more proportionate to the rest of the patient’s anatomy. It takes about an hour and a half to two hours to perform breast augmentation, and the surgery is followed by a recovery period of about two weeks, more or less.

During the recovery period, patients can experience different side effects that normally occur after surgery, such as swelling and bruising, pain and discomfort, and also a feeling of tiredness. Many patients contact the plastic surgeon in the first few days to ask if it is normal to feel tired after a breast augmentation. In short, the answer is yes. It is normal and something the patient shouldn’t be worried about.

The patient leaves the medical facility within hours after waking up from the general anesthesia. This means that when the patient gets home, there are still anesthetic substances left in the system. These substances will be eliminated sooner or later, depending on the metabolism of the patient over the course of the next few days. The feeling of tiredness is often associated with these substances that are still in the body and also with the fact that the body is recovering from the surgical trauma.

To fight fatigue, patients are advised to get enough rest, to have a balanced diet. and drink plenty of water so the anesthetic substances can be eliminated from the body as soon as possible. Also, taking short walks around the room a few times per day starting with the first day post-op can also help to eliminate the anesthesia from the system and combat the tiredness. A few days of rest and good food should be enough to make the patient feel better and able to start resuming some of the normal activities.
