Asymmetric breasts are not as uncommon as you might think. Perfect symmetry is not really a characteristic of the human body. We often have a hand or ear smaller than the other. Of course, for most of us, the asymmetry is no slight that is not visible to the naked eye. The same is valid for breasts. The breasts can suffer from different types of asymmetries: one breast is smaller than the other or the breasts have different shapes or positions on the chest wall. Plastic surgery offers treatment options for most of these breast imperfections; however, the surgical plan needs to be customized according to the patient’s anatomy and the results she desires to achieve.
When the patient has a breast considerably smaller than the other, we have three different options. To be able to find out what is the right approach for your case, you will need to schedule a pre-operative consultation with the plastic surgeon and allow him to perform a medical examination of your breasts. Generally speaking, the asymmetries of the breasts tend to be more obvious and noticeable if the breasts have a larger volume. If the patient has breasts that are on the larger size and too big for the patient’s anatomy, the plastic surgeon might recommend breast reduction to correct the imperfection. If this option is preferred, the patient will undergo surgery during which the plastic surgeon will reduce the size of the larger breast.
If the patient has breasts that are smaller compared to the rest of her anatomy, the plastic surgeon might recommend getting implants to correct the asymmetry. If the asymmetry is severe, the plastic surgeon will use implants of different volumes to make the breasts look more alike.
Another procedure that can be performed to correct slight asymmetry is fat transfer. This procedure is actually a combination of liposuction and fat transfer. Liposuction is performed on the donor areas, processed, and then re-injected into the smaller breast or both breasts to make them look similar. For this to be successful and maximize the results you can get, make sure to choose a talented, board-certified plastic surgeon to play out your procedure. Fat transfer to the breasts is a delicate procedure that requires a keen eye for detail and perfect sense of aesthetics. When this procedure is performed, the plastic surgeon can also enhance the shape of the breasts. It is important not to expect a considerable increase in the size of the breasts as this is not its purpose. If you want significantly larger breasts, then implants are the recommended option.
When deciding to undergo plastic surgery to correct breast asymmetry, keep in mind that the procedure will deliver breasts that look more like each other, not breasts that are identical to each other.
