Risk of infection after buttock enhancement procedures

Buttock enhancement procedures involve incisions in your skin, which make you more susceptible to infections. It has been found that most infections induced by a buttock shutterstock_189090659enhancement procedure show up within one month after the procedure. It is important to understand that infections after surgery occur because of the attack of germs on the surgical site.

After buttock enhancement, you may notice drainage of pus from the surgical site. Your buttocks may turn red and become painful and sore. Infection of the wound may trigger a fever and make you feel nauseous.

Most of the germs responsible for infection are bacteria, which may enter the surgical wound via an unclean caregiver or clinical tool, or through the air. Also, bacteria may already be living in your body, and when you undergo the buttock enhancement procedure or any other surgery, it creates ideal conditions for them to spread to the wound.

If you plan to go for buttock enhancement, make sure to discuss your medical history, lifestyle, and other important information with your surgeon. If you are suffering from diabetes, and if your diabetes has been poorly managed, you are at a higher risk of infection after a buttock enhancement procedure. Moreover, people with weak immune systems and people suffering from obesity are more at risk of post-surgery infection. Your lifestyle can also make you more susceptible to infections after a buttock enhancement procedure. If you are a regular smoker, or if you are taking immunosuppressants like corticosteroids, you are at a greater risk of infections after surgery.

It is important to understand the different levels of post-surgical infection so you can take preventive measures. There are two levels of surgical wound infections:

  1. Superficial: When the infection is limited to the skin after a buttock enhancement procedure, it is considered to be at the superficial level.
  2. Deep: When the infection has penetrated the skin and has reached the muscle and tissue at the surgical site, it is considered a deep infection.

The treatment options for infection after surgery depend on the level of infection; however, most patients are treated with antibiotics. If you have contracted an infection after a buttock enhancement, make sure to take your antibiotics according to the instructions of your surgeon for the recommended time period.

In order to prevent infection after your buttock enhancement procedure, ask your surgeon what measures you can take. If you are a smoker, stop smoking a few weeks before the procedure. Also, don’t shave the skin at the surgical site for at least two weeks before the surgery.

Moreover, you should make sure to stay clean, and tell caregivers to sanitize their hands before touching you. Your loved ones are important to you, but your health is more important, so don’t allow them to touch the surgical site. And last but not least, follow your surgeon’s instructions strictly. If you see or feel anything abnormal like fever, redness, pus discharge, or inflammation, see your doctor immediately.
